[bigletter]The drama ministry is an integral part of the church structure. The church drama group (CDG) is expected to present evangelical messages of restoration, revival, and enlightenment to the congregation.[/bigletter]
Primary Role of a church drama group
This is a supportive role to the church pastor, the church members, and to the church leadership (for church growth and expansion as well as evangelism). Responsibilities include providing corrective, informative, educative, illustrative, promotional, and pre-sermon drama.
Secondary Roles of a church drama group
These include drama tract publication, video and stage productions, audio drama, radio drama, television drama, and film production.
To fulfill the above, the group must have a dedicated drama leader and committed members. Such a leader must have some knowledge or aspire to acquire knowledge about church drama administration.
To have a vibrant and productive CDG that will carry out the mandate of the Master Jesus Christ, both the leader and the members must be born-again children of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and have the vision to serve the Lord in the area of drama evangelism.
The following guidelines will facilitate a church drama group’s fulfillment of Jesus’ mandate in Matthew 28:19-20.
- Organizing regular meetings – For a church drama group to be successful, there must be a regular time and period of meeting. The meeting must include prayer sessions, sharing the word of God, and regular rehearsals.
- Preparation of annual program of activities – A good plan such as the preparation of an annual program of activities will provide focus and direction as well as commitment on the part of individual members.
- Formation of an executive council – Committed members should be elected or appointed to manage different executive positions in the group for the smooth running of group affairs.
- Formation of sub-groups – Depending on the size of the group, the church drama group can be sub-divided into children drama team, youth drama team, and young adult drama team to facilitate coordination and better administration.
- Attending training, workshops, seminars, and conferences – The need for training and refresher courses cannot be over-emphasized in drama ministry. All members of the drama group should be able to attend at least a course in church drama ministry yearly.
- Monthly financial commitment – Members of a CDG should be able to contribute financially to assist the works of the CDG through voluntary donation.
- Checking on each other from time to time – The group leader and the welfare officers should be able to check on members regularly through visits, phone calls, or text messages. Members are also encouraged to check on each other regularly.
- Organization of prayer and fasting sessions – A vibrant CDG should set aside special periods for prayer and fasting for the group’s spiritual wellbeing and effectiveness.
- Application of proper casting methods – Casting of roles should not be based on favoritism but strictly on competence as well as a selfless commitment to Christ and the ministry’s duties.
- Encouraging members to learn at least two or three areas of film productions – Drama ministers should avail themselves of opportunities to acquire skills in two or three areas such as script writing, stage directing, make-up, set design/construction, production design/management, costume/sequence management, lighting design, and music/sound effect production.
- Establishment of support schemes to help members – Schemes should be put in place to support students, widows, and individuals in the mission field to keep the work of drama evangelism going.
- Establishment of CDG social media platforms – The creative use of social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and others should be explored to maximize the opportunities of reaching out to the outermost parts of the world through drama evangelism.
